Gravit8 was recently asked to provide some computer assistance to a non-profit organisation called Beth Uriel. Beth Uriel provide board and lodging for underpriviledged boys.
Some money had been donated by an anonymous party along with some computer screens which had been donated by a number of different organisations. Beth Uriel wanted to purchase some computers to assist the youngsters with their homework. Gravit8 recommended an open source environment. We used Suse Linux for the operating systems and Open Office for their word processing and spread sheeting needs. We managed to buy 4 standard computers, mice and keyboards for the classroom area. The reason why Gravit8 recommended the open source route was two fold. Firstly Suse runs a might less intensive operating system which allowed us to save money in not having to purchase high spec computers. Secondly and more importantly because no money needed to be spent on software all of the donated amount could be spent on hardware. These 2 factors enabled Beth Uriel to purchase 4 computers for the classroom instead of 1 or 2. Many thanks got to the organisation or person who donated the money and has given these young children a whole new world of possibility. |
